One of the most exciting experiences during the fall season is observing the change of colours of the leaves. As they go from the lush green from our hot summer days to the warm golden, amber and copper tones of the cool and crisp fall, it is quite a delight for the senses.
As you can experience this phenomenon all over Ontario, there are a few spots we have highlighted for you to get a fully immersive experience of this fall feature. Put on your hiking boots and zip up your jacket and get outdoors this fall season! Here are some great trails with breathtaking views you should definitely consider visiting.
Cheltenham Badlands
Formed 450 million years ago this iconic landscape is a natural heritage landmark in southern Ontario. It is known as the “Red Clay Hills” for its unique topography of red-coloured shale that has been eroded to smooth-faced gullies and hills. The Badlands are a part of the Niagara Escarpment which was a designated UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve in 1990. As a unique site to see, the surrounding trees of the Badlands will create a real picturesque backdrop that complements these red-coloured hills. If you live in our Castles of Caledon community, this site is close to your home and you must not miss it! Check out this community's homes here.
Rattlesnake Point Conservation Area
This conservation area is located right outside the town of Milton. Another site along the Niagara Escarpment has been cut by glaciers creating snake-like paths that have established its given name. This site includes thousand-year-old cedars and over ten km of dramatic limestone cliffs. This site is great as it has winding forest trails that lead to epic lookout points where you can overlook the countryside or if you're feeling a bit daring you can check out the view along a rock climbing route, just don’t look down!
Mono Cliffs Provincial Park
Another great park to visit during the fall season is Mono Cliffs which allows its visitors to walk between 30-foot rocky cliffs of the Niagara Escarpment. Located north of Caledon and 30 minutes West of our Bondhead community. This park boasts impressive cliffs, intriguing staircases and beautiful lookouts. Don’t forget to make your reservation for your park visit as it can get quite busy!
Dundas Peak
Last but not least, we have Dundas Peak, one of the smaller hiking trails of the previous options presented but definitely worth checking out. This 2.9 Km trail is located near Hamilton Ontario, a well-known area for its impressive waterfalls. In this location, you will find two well-known waterfalls in the area, Tews Falls and Webster Falls. The most popular hike begins at Tews Falls and follows the Tews Falls Lookout Trail to Dundas Peak with stunning panoramic views of the valley that will keep you coming back for more.
Instead of spending the weekend indoors, make sure you get out to explore the best of the fall season by including one of these hikes in your plans. These colours won’t be here for too long, so why not enjoy them while you can?
